Over 65 years of Excellence!
Over 65 years of experience and success!
Townsend Piano School was founded in 1950 by Robert Townsend. Originally located in University City, and teaching only piano, the school became a well known music institution. Robert Townsend was known as the most formidable pianist throughout the Midwesst, having won the Young Artist and the Artist Presentation awards. He was also known as one of the finest artist teachers in the Midwest.
In 1969, after starting piano lessons at the age of 4 and becoming an accomplished pianist himself, Tim Townsend (Robert's son), began teaching piano and became involved in the administration of the school. In 1992 he took over as director. The school added voice lessons, subsequently added violin, viola and flute during the 1990's In 2006 the school's name was changed to Townsend Music School.
In 1971, Townsend Music School added a location in Chesterfield, MO. (It was given a Ballwin, MO address by the post office) Eventually, the University City location closed down, allowing us to concentrate on one location. Being in this location made the school accessible to many more areas such as Manchester, Ellisville, Town & Country, Clarkson Valley, and Creve Coeur, MO. Some of our students come from Eureka, Grover and Dardenne Prairie.
Our school does not sell merchandise, pianos, or any instruments. We are not a store. We are interested solely in teaching and in the education of our pupils.
